There are few Telluride summer festivals that allow you to take-in the beauty of the Box Canyon like the Telluride Balloon Festival. For the 31st year in a row, hot air balloons from all over the country will convene in Telluride during the first weekend in June (June 7-8, 2014) to decorate the skies with their colorful canvases.
One of the great things about this festival weekend? The Balloon Festival is one of Telluride’s summer season weekends with smaller crowds allowing for a relaxing time for those wanting to explore the canyon without all of the crowds but still have things to do throughout the day.
Looking to attend this year’s festival? Here are a few tips on how to take-in this weekend of fun.
EARLY MORNING FLIGHTS:
Want to get a chance to ride in one of the hot air balloons over and across Telluride’s downtown area? Join the festival’s hot air balloon pilots in Telluride Town Park between 5:30-6 am for a chance to be choosen to hop in a basket. NOTE: you are not guaranteed a spot in a balloon by showing up but get to be involved with helping the pilots get the balloons ready for flight. Many people show-up for the experience!
A local favorite, the balloon glow that takes place on Telluride’s Colorado Avenue on Saturday night is one not to be missed. Hot air balloonists attending the festival set-up their balloons on main street and inflate them just after dusk for a beautiful “glow” see all along the street. Visitors and locals flood the area to see the show. Want to know a great way to take it all in? Make a reservation at the Sheridan Chop House and request window seating so you can dine in style and take in the show!
