To the naked-eye, the Telluride historic home located at 445 West Colorado Avenue appears to be just that, a home. With it’s white picket fence, amazing decks and garden spaces, and beautifully renovated interiors, the house offers ideas of a single-family’s American dream. But dive further into the 100+ year-old home’s history and the information you will find puts its roots in a more commercial light.
During the home’s ground-up renovation in 1998, while digging the foundation the homeowners found something they would never have imagined finding with what current knowledge they had of the home’s history. A beautifully hand-scripted ledger dated over a hundred years ago!
The ledger held hand-scripted accounts of provisions that were sold from the house. Not fully understanding what they were seeing, the owners worked with the Telluride Historical Museum to find out the true origins of the building. They discovered that it was originally a grocery store!
OTHER FUN HISTORY FACTS ABOUT THIS LISTING:
- The house was built in 1898 as a “mirror twin” to the house on the west-side of the property (photo above)
- Telluride was in the midst of its mining hay-day when the construction was complete.
- In the 60’s the house was renovated and the porch was switched to the opposite side and two additional windows were added to front.
